How to Conduct an Insurance Inventory for Your Apartment

9/27/2017

Picture
Making a home inventory list can serve multiple purposes. Not only does it help you track and declutter and organize items that require repair or upkeep, but most importantly, it allows you to document your valuable items for your renters insurance company if your belongings are damaged or your home burglarized.
Don’t wait to make your renters insurance inventory checklist until disaster strikes. Start now to take pictures, videos, and lists of all contents in your place. Trying to remember all your accumulated possessions you have over the years in the event they’re destroyed in a fire can cause you to forget important items and lose them for good.

An updated insurance inventory for your apartment will help you verify losses and settle your insurance claim faster. It will also help you decide on the right amount of insurance cover you need. There are some important things you’ll need to include in your list.

Supporting Evidence
Along with your inventory list, your renter’s insurance company may ask for evidence or supporting documentation beyond your list. A good rule of thumb is to keep all your receipts of your valuable possessions. By doing this, you not only have documentation for tax purposes, but you also have proof of purchase.
Stamp or engrave serial numbers on your valuable belongings like furniture, electronics, jewelry, and other costly items.

In your list, describe each item and take note its make, model and where you bought it. Attach your purchase contracts, sales receipts, and appraisals to your list.

Document Everything
Ensure you’ve covered everything in your apartment. You should:
  • Go through each room in your place and make an entry for every item
  • Take pictures of each item as you go
  • Write down or shoot close-up photographs of serial numbers
  • Include the original cost if you know it
  • Shoot a video walk-through that accompanies your list, stopping at each item briefly so it’s easy to follow the video
Another common strategy these days is to use a still video camera to document your belongings. Visual documentation has gotten much easier and more affordable today with digital photography.

Back it Up

Backup your data online in case your computer is damaged or stolen and store a set of hard copies at a relative’s or friend’s house, in case of a fire or other disaster.

Hopefully, you’ll only have to use your apartment inventory list to use it for your daily organization and upkeep; however, if faced with a burglary or other catastrophe, you’ll have the documentation needed for an insurance claim.

Is an Education Savings Plan Right for Your Student?

9/19/2017

College is expensive, and many parents want to help their kids pay for some or all of those costs. They don't want their kids to start their adult lives burdened with tens of thousands of dollars of debt. In fact, student debt has passed the $1 trillion mark, and it's still rising.

For many parents, the obvious solution is to open an education savings account, which encourages parents to save money over time that can be used to help pay for their child's college tuition later. But at the same time, many financial advisors warn that parents need to take care of themselves first. Too many ignore their own retirement accounts in favor of an education savings plan for the kids.

Is there a happy medium that can give parents and kids what they're looking for? There is...and it's not what you'd expect.

What Is an Education IRA?

Education IRAs are special savings accounts that work like a regular IRA. Except instead of preparing you for retirement, they help you prepare for your student's college expenses. They're now called "Coverdell accounts" instead of education IRAs.

If you have one, you can make after-tax contributions to the account, with investment options for helping that money grow tax-deferred. Coverdell accounts have their limitations, however. You can only put money in until your child is 18, and contributions are also capped per year at $2,000 per student. While these accounts do let you pull money out throughout your child's school years, there are limitations on what you can buy with the money. These limitations may affect your college student if he or she hopes to spend it on a computer, software, or transportation expenses. These are not allowed, according to the IRS rules governing a Coverdell account.

Is Permanent Life Insurance a Better Option?

Many parents don't like the limitations of an educational IRA. That's understandable. They may want to contribute more than $2,000 per year, or for their student to be allowed to spend that money on a computer or educational software. Permanent life insurance is a financial vehicle that can give you the flexibility you're looking for—flexibility a Coverdell account just can't offer.

With permanent life insurance, you give your family three things:

1. Guaranteed death benefit. As long as you keep your policy in force, your family will receive a tax-free death benefit when you pass away.

2. Cash value. Keep your policy in force, and the cash value that grows over the years is yours to do anything you want. Send the kids to college? Check. Kid not going to college? Help them buy a home, start a business, or supplement your own retirement account instead.

3. Peace of mind. That's what you get when you have both of the things listed above. No matter what happens, your family is protected. Of course, the most important reason to buy a policy is to give your loved ones the peace of mind and financial security only life insurance can bring. In the video below, you'll meet a family whose lives were forever changed by the death of a loved one - and the life insurance policy that helped them stay afloat financially.

3 More "I Dos" for Newlyweds

9/15/2017

Congratulations, newlyweds!“To have and to hold, from this day forward…”
At a time like this, there are 3 more “I dos” for you to consider:
1. Do you have life insurance? Any discussion about life insurance is going to start with this question, so let’s get it out of the way! As invigorated as people feel after finding the love of their life…let’s face it – they’re not invincible. The benefits of life insurance include protecting against loss of income, covering funeral expenses, gaining potential tax advantages, and having early access to money. Many of these benefits can depend on what kind of life insurance you have. Bottom line: having life insurance is a great way to show your love for years to come – for better OR worse.*
2. Do you have the right type and amount of life insurance? Life insurance policies are not “one size fits all.” There are different types of policies with different kinds of coverage, benefits, and uses. Having the right policy with adequate coverage is the key to protecting your new spouse in the event of a traumatic event – not just loss of life. Adequate life insurance coverage can help keep you and your spouse afloat in the case of an unexpected disabling injury, or if you’re in need of long term care. Your life with your spouse isn’t going to be one size fits all, and your life insurance policy won’t be either – for richer or poorer.
3. Do you have the right beneficiaries listed on your policy? This question is particularly important if you had an existing policy before marriage. Most newlyweds opt for listing each other as their primary beneficiary, and with good reason: listing the correct beneficiary will help ensure that any insurance payout will get delivered to them– in sickness and in health.
If you couldn’t say “I do” to any or all of these questions, contact me. It would be my pleasure to assist you newlyweds – or not-so-newlyweds – with a whole NEW way to care for each other: tailored life insurance coverage – ’til death do you part!

What Happens If a Life Insurance Policy Lapses?

9/14/2017

The dollar amount of death benefit payouts that seniors 65 and older forfeit annually through lapsed or surrendered life insurance policies is more than the net worth of either Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook) or Jeff Bezos (Amazon) – $112 billion! That’s $112 billion worth of death benefits, inheritance, donations to charities, and cash value down the drain. Or, more specifically, that’s $112 billion that goes right back to insurance companies – all because policyholders surrendered their policies or allowed them to lapse.

A lapse in a life insurance policy occurs when a premium isn’t paid. There is a brief grace period in which a premium payment for a life insurance policy can still be made. But if the payment is not made during the grace period, the life insurance policy will lapse. At this point, all benefits are lost.

There are circumstances in which the life insurance policy can be recovered. It could be as simple as resuming premium payments… or it could involve a lengthy process that includes a new medical exam, repaying all premium payments from the lapsed period, and possibly the services of an attorney.

The best practice to avoid a policy lapse is to make premium payments on time. To help out their customers, many insurance companies can automatically withdraw the monthly payment from a checking account, and some companies may take missed premium payments out of the policy’s cash value – but please note: term life insurance has no cash value. In this case, missed premium payments won’t have the cash value failsafe.
If you’re in danger of a lapse, contact me today. Together we can review your financial strategy to help you and your loved ones stay covered.
